Spyros LOUIS
Spyros Louis was born
in 1873. He was a farmer and a waterman and had never qualified for the
Olympic Marathon of 1896. The legend says that it was a king's official
who had forced the organising comitee to accept Louis' participation. He
won the first Marathon of the Olympics with 2 hours 58 minutes and 50 seconds.
That race was his first and last one. He accepted a lot of presents and
stopped training after that March of 1986, although he was only 23 years
old. All his life was full of honors by the Greeks that had named the Marathon
as their national event for that first Olympiad. Louis died in 1940.
