Bailey: Those who had written me off made a mistake. I spent a whole week preparing for this race here in Cologne. That's why I was so fast. And in spite of a head wind! Just as with Deon Hemmings, Cologne is home territory for me. No one can beat me here!

Kipketer: I wanted to run a world record on this track because Joaquim Cruz ran a WR here in 1984 with 1:41.77. The record didn't
stand though because unfortunately Sebastian Coe was a little bit faster using semi-automatic timing. I thank God that I was able to give Cologne a great world record. Unofficial splits (mine) for Kipketer: 23.8, 49.3, 1:14.6

Barmasai: I'm the third Kenyan world record breaker within 10 days [actually 11]. Today, I would have even Wilson Boit Kipketer. I'd
like to use this to wish him a speedy recovery [he fell and injured a knee on the final water jump in Brussels]. I should also really thank Moses Kiptanui who has done so much for steeplechasing in Kenya.

110 HURDLES (-0.2) 1. Crear (USA), 13.10;  2. Reese (USA), 13.22; 3. Johnson (USA), 13.28; 4. Balzer (GER), 13.31; 5. Schwarthoff (GER), 13.45; 6. Brown (USA), 13.65; 7. Korving (NED), 13.69.
Crear: I think I must have timed myself wrongly. I've got all the opposition under control right now. Actually, it should have been me
(sic) who was world champion. Oh well, so "he" was third today. I don't think we allow ourselves enough rest. It was tough to  oncentrate because next door the pole vaulters were jumping.

400 HURDLES. 1. Bronson (USA), 47.94; 2. Matete (ZAM), 47.99; 3. Digana (FRA), 48.19; 4. Mashchenko (RUS), 48.54; 5. D. Morgan (JAM), 48.96; 6. Al-Nubi (QAT), 49.91; 7. Kleinsteuber (GER), 51.12; 8. Kolb (GER), 51.47.
Bronson: I feel lucky to have won here at one of the big traditional meetings. Above all, I'm happy with my sub-48 time. Most of
all, I'm pleased that I beat the great Diagana (world champ). This is my first time here in Cologne, and I really find the fans fantastic.

Riedel: Here, I managed to get the key to the safe for the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka. [The overall winner will pocket $250,000.] I'll be trying my hardest to win there. My performance here wasn't technically perfect, but I'm still happy with the distance.

Cheromei: The weather today was just too warm for a fast time. Unfortunately, the rain this morning didn't change much. So, you will have to excuse the fact that I didn't run under 15 minutes. The Cologne fans are really fantastic. They really push you around the track.

100 HURDLES (-0.1)  1. Engquist (SWE), 12.60;  2. Freeman (JAM), 12.64;  3. Dimitrova (BUL), 12.82;  4. Dickey (USA), 12.89;  5. Anderson (CAN), 12.97;  6. Rose (JAM), 12.98;  7. Sonn (GER), 13.19.

Schmidt (GER), 55.84; Did not finish: Bidouane (MAR); Hemmings: Of course, I won here in Cologne because Cologne is my second home. (Yep, that's what it said on the page.) It's a shame that Nezha Bidouane wasn't well, though. Otherwise, I'm sure she would have pushed me to be even faster. [Bidouane quit at about the eight hurdle.] The Cologne fans are terrific as always.

HIGH JUMP  1. Babakova (UKR), 2.00 [1.85 - 1.88 - 1.91 - 1.94 - 1.97 - 2.00 - 2.02/xxx]; 2. Astafei (GER), 1.97; 3. Haugland (NOR), 1.97;  4. Acuff (USA), 1.94;  5. Iagar (ROM), 1.91;  6. TRIPLE JUMP  1. Mateescu (ROM), 14.67 [x - 14.29 (-0.1) - 14.67 (0.0) - 14.19 (-0.1) - x - 14.59 (0.3)];  2. Kasparkova (CZE), 14.50 (0.1);  3. Hansen (GBR), 14.33 (0.1);  4. Mateescu: I'm not completely happy with my distance of 14.67 but we had a constant headwind. It's not so bad though, because after all, I did beat the world champion. At least, my performance will be the meet record here for at least one year. That's something!

SHOT PUT  1. Kumbernuss (GER), 20.15 [19.91 - 20.05 - 20.15 - x - x - 19.91]; 2. Koryanenko (RUS), 19.69; 3. Storp (GER), 18.79;  4. Oakes (GBR), 18.36; 5. Krivelyova (RUS), 18.29; 6. Kleinert (GER), 18.02.
