MEN

1. Christos Papanikolaou (pole vault). The former world record holder is the mostly ranked Greek athlete among the top 10 athletes of pole vault. From 1966 to 1972 he was seven times among the best world athletes of the year, as he ranked 2nd in 1970, 3rd in 1967 and 1972, 4th in 1968, 5th in 1971, 6th in 1966 and 7th in 1969.

2. Constantinos Kenteris (200 m.). The Olympic and World Champion named 200 m. runner of the year for 2000 and 2001. He is the only European who got this title for 2 consecutive periods after Pietro Mennea. He, also, ranked 2nd in 2002, when he got the European title.

3. Constantinos Gatsioudis (javelin throw). At the age of 26 Gatsioudis was the athlete of the year for javelin in 1999, while he was third in 2000, sixth in 1997and tenth in 1998. In this 5-year period he won a silver and two bronze world champs medals.

4. Georgios Roubanis (pole vault). The Olympic Games bronze medallist in Melbourne and former European record holder ranked 4th world athlete in 1956 and 5th in 1957 and 1958.

5. Lambros Papakostas (high jump). He ranked twice among the top 10 of high jump, seventh in 1995 and also seventh in 1997.

6. Periklis Iakovakis (400 m. hurdles). He ranked 4th in the 2003 rankings, after his bronze medal in Paris' World Championships.

7. Alexandos Papadimitriou (hammer throw). He was tenth in 2000, when he participated in the Olympics final, 7th in 2002 when he got the european bronze medal and also tenth in 2003.

8. Antonios Kounadis (discus throw). He was fifth in 1959.

9. Christos Polychroniou (hammer throw). He was seventh in 1999, when he participated in Sevilla's world champs final.

-. Constantinos Koukodimos (long jump). He was seventh in 1994.

11. Stavros Tziortzis (400 m. hurdles). He ranked tenth in 1972, while he was also tenth in 1974, when he placed 7th in the final race of Munich Olympic Games.

12. Georgios Papavassiliou (3.000 m. steeple). He  ranked 9th in 1960.

13. Vassilios Papageorgopoulos (100 m.). Papageorgopoulos was 10th in 1972.

WOMEN

1. Mirela Manjani (javelin throw). The former world record holder ranked first in 1999 when she won the world champs in Sevilla and set the world best mark, She was also first in 2003, when she doubled her world titles in Paris, second in 2001 after Menendez, fourth in 2000 after the silver medal she won in Sydney and sixth in 2002.

2. Anastassia Kelesidou (discus throw) Six times so far among the best discus throwers. She was third in 2000, fourth in 1999 and 2003, fifth in 2001, sixth in 1998 and eighth in 1997.

3. Katerina Thanou (100 m.) Five times among the top 10 world sprinters as she was second, following Marion Jones, in 2000, 3rd in 2001 and 1999, tenth in 1997 and 1998

4. Olga Vasdeki (triple jump) Between 1996 and 2000 she was every year among the top 10 world athletes; second in 1998, fifth in 1996, sixth in 1997, seventh in 2000 and 9th in 1999.

5. Katerina Voggoli (discus throw). She ranked tenth in 1999, seventh in 1998, second in 2001 when she got the European title and third in 2003, after her bronze medal in Paris' World Championships.

6. Sofia Sakorafa (javelin throw). The former javelin world record holder ranked first in 1982 and second in 1983.

7. Anna Verouli (javelin throw). The former European Champion and world champs bronze medallist was second in 1982 and fourth in 1984.

8. Niki Xanthou (long jump). Best athlete of 1997 for long jump, when she got the silver in Athens' 97 world champs and seventh place one year ago. She was also 10th in 2003.

9. Paraskevi Tsiamita (triple jump). Sevilla' s world champion ranked first in 1999.

10. Stella Tsikouna (discus throw). She was ninth in 1997 and seventh in 2000.

11. Paraskevi Patoulidou (100 m. hurdles). Barcelona's gold medalist was fifth in 1992 rankings.

12. Niki Bakoyianni (high jump). She was seventh in 1996 rankings the year she won the silver medal in Atlanta Olympic Games.

13. Athanassia Tzoumeleka (20000 m. walk). She was 8th in 2003.

14. Angeliki Tsiolakoudi (javelin throw). She was tenth in 2001 when she participated in the world champs final.

14. Chryssopigi Devetzi (triple jump). She was 10th in 2003 when she was in the world champs final.
