Sevilla '99 is over and Athletics is ready to enter the new millenium in fashion and controversy
August 29. So, the show is over. The flag will be handed to Edmonton officials and the athletes will take some rest. The next appointment is for Sydney, some 13 months from now. Except for some of the daring who will go on to compete in some more meetings in 1999. Money awaits as the Golden League Series continue. However, the 7th World Championships in Athletics posed some questions to the officials and to the millions of fans... Marion Jones was sacrificed in her quest for what proved to be unachievable. Should we consider the athletes as some kind of gods? Or is it chemistry that presents us with those exciting performances? 1999 leaves us without Merlene Ottey, Linford Christie, Javier Sotomayor and Dennis Mitchell. Those who were formerly idols for the young are now the examples to avoid. The Olympics of Sydney will bring us to a new era, to an unknown period where -we suppose- a lot of things will be finally decided. For the good of the sport, we hope... Meanwhile, Greece -the homeland of this website- climbs to the fourth place of the World classification. Two gold, two silver and two bronze are the medals that the sons and daughters of the ancient gods brought back home. A time to rejoice and then a period to think... As 2004 aproaches and Athens prepares for the Olympics, Greece wishes to play an important role to World Sport. Will she be successful in her quest. Or, will the mistakes of the present -currently hidden behind the great successes, as in Seville- will prove fatal? We 'll have to wait and see...
