20. Vassilis Sevastis reelected President of the Greek Federation
At
the elections held yesterday in Pireaus, Vassilis Sevastis was reelected
President of the Greek Athletics Federation with a precentage of 80 % of
the about 230 Greek Sports Clubs representatives. He will stay at his position
until 2004, some months after the end of the Athens Olympics. Opponents,
however, claim that the elections were illegal, due to financial problems
to be solved by the jury, and did not participate at the elections.
October 11. The
1999 period is over
As by tradition happens,
the outdoor season finished for Greece with the Aegen Sea Games, held last
weekend in the island of Chios, with the partipation of many young and
promising athletes. Emmanuel Zannis (javelin: 70,37 m) and Christina Constantinou
(shot put: 15,21 m.) set the best marks of the games. Check our pages with

29. Silver
epilogue for greek delegation: Costas Gatsioudis second of javelin competition
Costas Gatsioudis got the
javelin silver medal, behind Finnish Aki Parviainen. Gatsioudis threw 89,18
m. and he was leading the competition untill the 5th attempt, when Parviainen
sent the javelin to 89, 52 m. to continue the long tradition of Finland
in this event. The world record holder Jan Zelezny was third with 87, 67
m. Thus, Greece completed its participation in the world
championships with 6 medals in total. Costas
Gatsioudis was born on December 17, 1973 in Didymoteichon,
Greece. He trains with Antonis Papadimitriou, the former Greek javelin
Champion, his height is 1,88 m. and his weight 94 Kgs. He was bronze medallist
at World Champs in Athens '97, Mediterranean Champion in 1997, 10th in
Atlanta Olympic Games, gold medalist at the European Champs 20-22 in 1994
and silver medalist at World Juniors Championships in 1992. In 1992 he
broke the world juniors record with 80, 30 m.

28. Mirela
Tzelili won the javelin gold.
Mirella
Manjani- Tzelili won the gold medal of javelin throw on the 8th
day of the 7th World Championships. Tzelili threw a 67,09 m. to set
a national best and the second world performance of the season. Defending
champion Trine Hattestadt placed third with 66,06 while Tatyana Shikolenko
got the silver with 66, 43 m. Mirella Tzelili
was born on December 21, 1976 in Dyrrahion, Albania. She
trains with Vassilios Kokolis, her height is 1, 65 m. and her weight
64 kgs. She is married with the Greek weightlifting champion Giorgos Tzelilis,
4th in Atlanta. Mirela Tzelili was 9th in European Championships 1998 and
11th in Athens '97. As a member of the Albanian National team she was 8th
at the World Juniors Champs in 1994 and silver medalist at the European
Juniors Champs in 1995.

27. Easy qualification for Kostas
Gatsioudis.
Kostas
Gatsioudis was the best qualifier of Javelin Throw tonight in Sevilla.
In the first attempt he sent the javelin to 87, 97 m. Only four athletes
made the standard of 83, 50 m. while almost all the favourites were finally
qualified, althought with some difficulties mainly due to the humidity
and the high temperature. The great surprise of the event was the disqualification
of the world champion Marius Corbett of the RSA, who threw only 76, 34
m. The Greek walker Despina Deskou was 13th in the 20.000 walk final which
was dominated by Chinese Hongyu Liu and Yan Wang,
while Kerry Saxby was the bronze medalist. Niki Bakogianni was unable to
tide over injury problems she had this year and with a jump at 1, 85 m.
she will not participate in the final of the high jump.

23. Kelesidou gets Greece's
second medal in Seville

Kelesidou managed to win a Silver medal for Greece at Women's Discus Throw
this
afternoon in Seville. Kelesidou, who is 27 years old and comes from
Salonica, is the National Record holder for Greece with 67, 70 m.Her greatest
sucess so far was last year's 7th place at the European Champs and her
'95 World Champs 11th position. She was considered unlucky in Greece, because
-despite her very good throws the last five years- she had never won an
important medal. She is 1, 92 m. tall and weighs 92 kgs. She trains in
Salonica with Kostas Spanidis. Except for Kelesidou, Greece was represented
by two more girls in the Discus final. Stella Tsikouna, who was 7th in
Athens, threw 63, 43 m. to get 8th place and Katerina Voggoli (5th in Budapest)
was 11th tonight with 61, 00 m. Christos Meletoglou jumped 16, 37 m. at
the triple Jump Qualification Round tonight and ranked 28th.

24. Katerina Koffa, Kostas Kenteris and Panayotis Sarris were qualified
for the 200 m. quarter-finals. Great race for Periklis Iakovakis.
Kostas Kenteris
was the best among Greek athletes participated in the morning
200 m. heats. He won his heat with 20" 68 and qualified easily for the
next round. Panayotis Sarris, running in the second lane, was fourth in
the first heat with 20" 78 and followed Kenteris to the quarter-finals.
Giorgos Panayotopoulos took the fourth place participating in the last
heat with 20" 82, time not so fast to secure his qualification. Finally,
Katerina Koffa was fourth with 22" 35 and she will participate in the afternoon
quarter-final heats. Periklis Iakovakis, participating in the first heat
of 400 m. hurdles, ran the distance in 49"53, setting a personal best and
winning Ken Harnden. The world juniors champion of 1998 had the 18th performance
among 48 participants and left out of the semifinals. Prodromos Korkizoglou
have had a good start and he is at the 8th place after three events of
decathlon.

23. Greek girls fly in Sevilla
Katerina Thanou won her
first Outdoor World medal yesterday clocking a fantastic 10" 84. (10" 83.
at the Semis), while Voula Tsiamita jumped 15, 07 m. at the Qualification
Round and now her name features as one of the top ten in Triple Jump history.
Some biographical details
about the two Greek girls:
Thanou was born in
Athens on the 1st of February of 1975. She is 1, 65 m. tall and weighs
56 kgs. She trains with Christos Tzekos. Her major successes were the Bronze
medal she got last year in Budapest at the European Championships (100
m.), the Gold medal at the 60 m. of the Indoor World Championships of Maebashi
in '99, the Gold medal at the European Indoor Champs of '96 and the fourth
place at the World Junior Championships of '94 (100 m.).
Tsiamita was botn
in Volos on the 10th of March, 1972. She trains with Georghe Pomaski. Her
height is 1, 70 m. and her weight 60 kgs. Last year she was 9th at the
European Championships of Budapest, while she was 5th in Maebashi this
year.

22. Great Jump for Voula Tsiamita: 15,07 m.
Voula Tsimita needed just
one jump to qualify for the triple jump final tonigh
in
Sevilla. With 15,07 m. she broke the national record for Greece, improved
her own world leading performance and became the 8th
all time European athlete. European Champion Olga Vasdeki reached the
final with her 3rd attempt to 14,27 m. All the favourites qualified except
the world record holder Inessa Kravets who was 22nd at the qualification
round. Meanwhile Katerina Thanou was second in the first 100 m. semifinal
and broke the National Record for Greece
once more with 10"83 and now she is the 4th all time European athlete.
In the same heat Inger Miller with 10"81. was the faster qualifier for
the final.

21 National Record for Thanou
at the Quarter-Finals
Katerina Thanou won easily
her heat tonight at Women's 100 m. Quarter Finals with 10" 86., which is
a new National Record for Greece (7th
European
All Time) and features now as one of the top favorites for a medal,
even as the only one who can beat Marion Jones. At Women's Discus, Tassia
Kelesidou (64, 12 m.), Stella Tsikouna (64, 16 m.) and Katerina Voggoli
(62, 39 m.) all qualified for the Final, a fantastic performance for Greece.
Giorgos Giannelis ran 8' 30" 55. at the Steeple and ranked 25th. Christoforos
Choidis performed 10" 21. and Giorgos Theodoridis 10" 30., both
close to their PBs, but did not managed to go to the Semis of the Men's
100 m. Choidis was 19th and Theodoridis 30th. Lambros Papakostas showed
that he is not yet ready after his torn achilles last year, and with 2,
15 m. was just 19th at Men's High Jump.

21 Niki Xanthou, silver in Athens, out of the finals in Seville
Greece's favorite female
athlete, Niki Xanthou, 2nd World Champion of Athens and 4th Olympic Champion
of Atlanta had a very bad morning on the
first day of the 7th World Championships in Athletics and did not manage
to qualify for the final of the Long Jump. She jumped 6, 34 m. and, although
she was the 6th best for '99 so far, she won't be at the final of the event
in Seville, ranking 26th. On the other hand, Katerina Thanou was the fastest
qualifier for Women's 100 m. this morning with 11" 10. At Men's 100 m.
both Christoforos Choidis and Georgios Theodoridis advanced to the 2nd
round, running the distance at 10" 30. and 10" 32. At Men's Hammer Throw,
Christos Polychroniou qualified for the final of the event with a throw
at 76, 82 m., while Alexandros Papadimitriou threw only 72, 97 m. and will
not continue, finishing 27th. Young star Vaios Tiggas competed at the Shot
Put and with 18, 50 m. was 27th.
August 10. A numerous
Greek team in Sevilla '99
The Greek
team for Sevilla '99 was formally anounced today in Athens. Twenty
three men and eighteen women compose the more numerous delegation ever
sent by Greece to world championships.
July
19. A Greek student is the winner of IAAF's competition.
Dimitris
Kalohairetis, a Greek student from Athens, built an nice site
and won the big competion "Sevilla '99 Web Site Contest" organized
by the IAAF.
July 9-13. Christos
Polychroniou breaks the NR and wins silver in Universiada '99. Bronze medal
for Christos Magkos.
Christos Polychroniou broke
the national record for Greece with a throw at 79,83 m. to win the silver
medal in Universiada '99, ahead of Zsolt Nemeth who won with 80,40
m. Alexandros Papadimitriou was 7th in the same competition with 76,66
m. Also yesterday Christos Magkos won the bronze medal of 200 m. setting
a personal best at 20"70. Panayotis Sarris was 7th with 21" 08. Stella
Tsikouna was 4th in the Discus Throw with 61, 59 m.
May
29-30. Panhellinios GS was promoted to the first division
of European Clubs.
Panhellinios
GS was promoted to the Super League.The Greek Champion team was first both
in men and women, ahead of the Slovenian and French Champions respectively.
On Sunday Marleen Ottey ran a 22"72 and Voula Tsiamita set a long jump
personal best at 6,60 m. The greek team was just one step from the premier
division after the events of the first
day and the wins of Alexopoulos (10"26). Tsiamita (14,07 m.), Benhassi
(2'01"70.), Koffa (11"41.), Parris (55"32.), Lamboura (60,87 m.), Liapis
(2,23 m.) and other athletes resulted a safe difference by 10 grades in
men and 20 grades in women competitions.

Bakogianni and Costas Gatsioudis set the best marks at Greek
Clubs Champs Good start for Voula Tsiamita (14,02 m.), Dimitris Kokotis
(2,20 m.), Vaios Tigkas (18,66 m.) and the discus throwers Stella Tsikouna
(62,20 m.) and Katerina Voggoli (59,01 m.). Despina Deskou set a
5.000 m. walk NR for Greece with 21'37"7.

07, 1999:Greek athletes for Peace in Balkans.
The
former javelin world record holder Sofia Sakorafa was among the big names
which accompanied the football team of AEK to Beograd. AEK gave a match
for peace with Partizan today and had an enthousiastic welcome by the inhabitants
of Beograd and other cities.

Panayotis
Charamis won the Greek Cross Country championships,
held at Pyli of Trikala. The 6 first, who will compete at the Balkan Championships
are: Charamis, Tsatrafyllis, Zaragkas, Poliias, Papoulias, Athanassiou.

Indoor Championships begin with Pole Vault record by Tsiliggiri
Georgia Tsiliggiri had an
excellent day clearing 4, 20 m., after she had already broken the Greek
Record once at 4, 15 m. at women's Pole, on the first day of the Hellenic
Championships at Pireaus. Papadias, the '97 world champion, won the
60 m. with 6" 62. and Niki Xanthou jumped 6, 67 m. at the Long Jump. On
the second day, Voula Tsiamita won the Triple Jump with 14, 35 m. and Katerina
Koffa the 200 m. with 23" 34.

Georgia
Tsilliggiri cleared 4,11 m. with her second attempt, improving three times
the NR for Greece in the second meeting
of Pireaus. Good performances by Tereza Marinova (14,42 m.) Nora Ivanova
(23" 16.) and John Regis (20"85).
