These are also the best performances ever by a non-Chinese athlete, so for a lot of people (not the IAAF - that ratified Jang Bo's record lately- however) Szabo and Ouaziz are the two best athletes ever in the event. As far as the quest for the one million, all four athletes managed to continue their winning streak witn Bryan Bronson struggling hard at the last meters to beat European Record holder Stephane Diagana by 1/100 of a second. Maurice Greene won the 100 m., but he made a false start that the organisers should have understood. His reaction time was 0.092 while the legal limit is 0.100.

July 19: El Guerrouj misses 2 km WR for less than half a second
In the Grand prix II meeting of Gateshead it was the third WR attempt for El Guerrouj in one week, this time at the 2.000 m. Although he broke Aouita's Moroccan record he missed Morcelli's WR for less than 50/100. The weather conditions in Gateshead and the lack of big names did not bring any more good performances. Quite unlucky was the Greek champion Lambros Papakostas that was ijured badly and will probably miss the European games in August.

July 14: Fabulous world record by Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome: 3' 26" 00.
Hicham El Guerrouj finally broke the 1.500 m. world record that he was seeking the last couple of years. In a fantastic race in the Golden Gala meeting of Rome, he ran alone after the 1.150 m. and proved that he is the best runner ever in the distance by smashing the previous Morceli's record by more than a second! The Golden Gala Meeting of Rome, the second of the Golden League Series, was held in the Olympico Stadium of the "eternal city" with the participation of all the top stars. Jonathan Edwards, Bryan Bronson, Frank Fredericks, Svetlana Masterkova, Charity Opara, Marion Jones, Haile Gebresselasie and of course El Guerrouj doubled their victories on their quest for the 1 million dollars to be awarded to the winner of allthe  6 Golden League and the  Moscow GP Final meetings. Michael Johnson (44" 40.) was the winner of the 400 m. this time with Mark Richardson (44" 62.) finishing second. William Kiptanui tried to break the Steeple WR, but he was desperately alone, while Marion Jones jumped 7, 23 m. in the Long Jump, leaving May wandering what might have been. Niki Xanthou jumped only 6, 40 m. to remain 10th. It is a pity that the beautiful stadium hosted a very small crowd and that the stopwatches were very rarely working. As a result, even after El Guerrouj's record, everybody knew it was a WR but nobody knew what was the exact time!

June 23: Mutola's Indoor WR not ratified by the IAAF
The IAAF decided that Maria Mutola's indoor WR was illegal as she was running in the infield of her lane. The press release of the IAAF says: "The Council of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), on the advice of its Technical Committee and following a review of video evidence, has decided not to ratify the 800 metres mark of 1:56.36,  set by Maria Mutola (MOZ) in Lievin, France on February 22, as a new indoor world record. The Council confirmed from TV images that the athlete had contravened rule 141.2 by running outside of her lane (effectively on the in-field) during the final bend. The Indoor World Record for women's 800 metres remains 1:56.40, set by Christine Wachtel (GDR) in Vienna on February 13 1988.

On March 21 and 22, the World Cross Country Championships were held in Marrakech, Morocco.
The winners of the various events were Pault Tergat (for the fourth time of his career), John Kibowen and Sonia
O' Sullivan who won both the women's events. The Competition was held with a lot of success, but a major
problem occurred when the Moroccan authorities did not let the Israeli National Team to enter Morocco. The
authorities cited "security reasons" and IAAF had to condemn their action on March 23. The International
Federation stated: "The decision by the local authorities to prohibit the Israeli team from entering Morocco
contravenes the IAAF's fundamental principles and objectives in the organization of international athletics
around the world." The IAAF also stated that such an action was contrary to written guarantees provided by the
Moroccan government at the time of Marrakech's candidature for the World Championships in December 1996.
