Griffith Joyner dies at the age of 38
FloJo died today in California
at the age of 38. The world record holder of women sprints had a heart
seizure, shedding saddness and skepticism to the worldwide athletics family.
She was triple gold medallist in Seoul 1988. In that year she bettered
Ashford's 100 m. WR for 0.27 sec. (from 10"76. to 10"49) and Drechshler's
200 m. WR for 0.37 sec. (from 21"71. to 21"34.). She was married with the
triple jump champion Al Joyner.

Heike Dreschler beated her today. However, yesterday Jones was once again
impressive, as she ran the 100 m. in 10" 65., although the weather was
not warm, and became the second woman ever in history under 10" 70. In
men's steeple the incredible German Damian Kallabis did it again: He won
the race as he beated the WR holder Berbard Barmassai at the last meters!
Virgilius Alekna was fantastic with 69, 66 m. in the Discus and Tarasov
jumped 5, 85 m. in the pole vault despite the cool weather and the strong
winds.

impressive performances were achieved: Nezha Bidouane ran the 400 m. Hurdles

and Masterkova in the women's. Maksim Tarasov (5, 95 m.) was the only athlete
who could cope with the harsh weather conditions of Moscow , as the cold

September 1: Gabriela
Szabo rules women's best 5.000 m. race ever!
The 6th
Golden League '98 meeting was held today in Berlin. The spectators
were lucky enough to attend the best 5.000 m. race that women have ever
ran, with Gabriela Szabo breaking the European Record with 14' 31" 48.
and Zohra Ouaziz breaking the African one with 14' 42" 08. These are also
the best performances ever by a non-Chinese athlete, so for a lot of people
(not the IAAF - that ratified Jang Bo's record lately- however) Szabo and
Ouaziz are the two best athletes ever in the event. As far as the quest
for the one million, all four athletes managed to continue their winning
streak witn Bryan Bronson struggling hard at the last meters to beat European
Record holder Stephane Diagana by 1/100 of a second. Maurice Greene won
the 100 m., but he made a false start that the organisers should have understood.
His reaction time was 0.092 while the legal limit is 0.100.

world record by Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome: 3' 26" 00.
Hicham El Guerrouj
finally broke the 1.500 m. world record that he was seeking the last couple
of years. In a fantastic race in the Golden
Gala meeting of Rome, he ran alone after the 1.150 m. and proved that
he is the best runner ever in the distance by smashing the previous Morceli's
record by more than a second! The Golden Gala Meeting of Rome, the second
of the Golden League Series, was held in the Olympico Stadium of the "eternal
city" with the participation of all the top stars. Jonathan Edwards, Bryan
Bronson, Frank Fredericks, Svetlana Masterkova, Charity Opara, Marion Jones,
Haile Gebresselasie and of course El Guerrouj doubled their victories on
their quest for the 1 million dollars to be awarded to the winner of allthe
6 Golden League and the Moscow GP Final meetings. Michael Johnson
(44" 40.) was the winner of the 400 m. this time with Mark Richardson (44"
62.) finishing second. William Kiptanui tried to break the Steeple WR,
but he was desperately alone, while Marion Jones jumped 7, 23 m. in the
Long Jump, leaving May wandering what might have been. Niki Xanthou jumped
only 6, 40 m. to remain 10th. It is a pity that the beautiful stadium hosted
a very small crowd and that the stopwatches were very rarely working. As
a result, even after El Guerrouj's record, everybody knew it was a WR but
nobody knew what was the exact time!

June 23: Mutola's
Indoor WR not ratified by the IAAF
The IAAF decided that
Maria Mutola's indoor WR was illegal as she was running in the infield

Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), on the advice of its Technical Committee
and following a review of video evidence, has decided not to ratify the
800 metres mark of 1:56.36, set by Maria Mutola (MOZ) in Lievin,
France on February 22, as a new indoor world record. The Council confirmed
from TV images that the athlete had contravened rule 141.2 by running outside
of her lane (effectively on the in-field) during the final bend. The Indoor
World Record for women's 800 metres remains 1:56.40, set by Christine Wachtel
